How much should I expect to pay?


I'm going for my first dress fitting soon and when I bought the dress it fit me like a glove. Although I have lost weight it has a corset back so it won't need to be taken in. It only needs about 3 iches taken off the hem. There is some beading at the bottom of the front and it has a beaded train as well (do they hem that as well?). How much should I expect to pay at the bridal salon to just hem my dress? Would it be cheaper if I went to a local seamstress?
I just don't want to end up paying half as much as I paid for the dress. I splurged on the dress and spent way more than I allocated but it was perfect and somehow it boggles my mind that to take some fabric off the bottom will cost almost as much as a whole new dress.

It's important to be comfortable with the place you will get the alterations done, so if you've heard good things about the bridal shop, have it done there. Or get a referral for a local seamstress that is reputable.

It will cost you more to have a wedding dress hemmed/altered than a normal dress just because of the care required to do it. Wedding dresses are usually a lot more fabric (because they are big ball gowns) and have delicate fabrics that need special care when altering. Also, if any beading needs to be moved for the hemming or fixed you want an experienced person doing that.

I've been to a few stores and looking at the way the dress samples are treated (dirty, not well cared for, beading loose or missing) and based on how they treat and repair samples, I would not have my dress altered there. But some others stores, the people really seem to know their stuff and the store is immaculate, so you get the feeling the dress and alterations would be safe.

I just found the dress I want, and although it's in the nicest store I've been to, and the ladies are very knowledgeable there, I'm still going to get my mom to do any alterations because she used to make wedding gowns, and I know SHE wouldn't trust anyone else doing it except her. I might not notice a little missing bead after an alteration, but it would drive my mom insane!

There is a bald patch on the rear of my cats tummy and it has light orange/pink patches on it. What is this?


My cats is 2 years old.
I only see the patch when she fully rolls over as it is sort of between her back leg bones.
Please tell me if she needs to go too the vets!

At what temperature, and for how long should I cook my chicken drumsticks in a gas oven?


Okay, I have cooked drumsticks before, but lately I've had problems.

I really think that cooking drumsticks depends on the type of oven you have. At my parent's house, they have an electric oven. I cooked the drumsticks there at 400 degrees for about an hour, and they were fine no problem.

Now, my sister has a gas oven, and I cooked the drumsticks at the same temperature, 400 degrees, for an hour. They came out looking a little pink on the inside, and the bone was a purpley-red color.

Should I reduce the temperature? I was thinking 350, because that's what I make boneless breasts with, but I don't know if drumsticks are different since they have the bone in them. So yes, my drumsticks do have the bone in them. Any suggestions?

I feel your pain. Gas ovens are tricky, and I grew up with not one but TWO in the house. Unlike electric ovens, which regulate temperatures based upon pre-set parameters, gas ovens rely a lot on the flow of natural gas into the heating element.

When I was growing up, Mom & Dad would constantly have to adjust recipes because the things weren't heating up properly, and they'd yell at the gas company the next day.

That being said, you will have to probably drop the temp 25-50 degrees to compensate for that heating element. I would also call your gas company to have them send someone out to "regulate" your oven to make sure it was heating properly.

As far as the drumstick issue, try them at 375 and check after an hour. Bone-in foods usually cook slower than boned items, so you may wish to give it another 15-20 minutes after that.

How can I re-sew a seam in a polyester cocktail dress with boning?


My boyfriend's homecoming dance is coming up, and I have the perfect dress. Only problem is, the seam has come undone on the bodice. The dress has boning and is lined, so I can't go in behind the tear and stitch it up that way. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Take it to an alterationist and have him/her repair it for you. Opening the lining and boning casing isn't that difficult, but you really do need to know what you're doing.

Hand sewing from the front is a possibility if your handwork is very, very good... but it sounds like you don't know how to sew and the mend you make is likely to be pretty apparent.
